Default Meteor Shower vs Fire Storm

I have a question about the difference between Fire Storm and Meteor Shower. The description of Fire Storm is clear about how often the damage occurs. the description of Meteor Shower is not (see below), the knockdown is every 3 seconds, but the damage frequency is unclear.
If the damage is also every 3 second, then the damage from Meteor Storm is roughly the same as Fire Storm (3x27 is 81 for every 3 seconds, compared to 84 on Fire Storm). given the cost of Meteor Shower and its long cast time, I'll take the slightly lower damage and no knockback!

Fire Storm
Spell. Create a Fire Storm at target foe's location. For 10 seconds, foes adjacent to that location are struck for 27 fire damage each second.

Meteor Shower
Spell. Create a Meteor Shower at target foe's location. For 9 seconds, foes adjacent to that location are struck for 84 fire damage and knocked down every 3 seconds. This Spell causes Exhaustion.

In PvE, the shutdown that occurs with pretty much disabling a whole mob for 9 seconds is tremoundous when compared to firestorm's weak damage and scatter clause, as well as the fact that meteor shower is usually used in combination with glyph of sacrifice and on bars which include Assassin's Promise, in order to cut the recharge down. Exhaustion is usually not a problem because you regain your max capacity travelling in-between groups of foes.

In PvP it's a whole different story. Neither are good :P

yeah PvE. and Prophecies only so no Assassin's promise.
Meteor Storm doesn't scatter? that might be interesting.

They also can't heal, deal damage, or hex while knocked down

go with meteor shower

[skill]assassin's promise[/skill] + [skill]glyph of sacrifice[/skill] + [skill]meteor shower[/skill]

meteor shower is better in pve. firestorm only does weak damage and causes the enemies to scatter everywhere. Where as MS has kd, which forces them to not scatter.
Besides Kd is the best thing you can do, pve wise.

no one's really answered your question yet....so to clarify the skill description...
foes adjacent to that location are: [struck for 84 fire damage + knocked down] every 3 seconds
or
foes adjacent to that location are: [struck for 84 fire damage] every 3 seconds + [knocked down] every 3 seconds

I really don't understand your post
you've posted 2 sentences that mean the same thing... the question is whether [meteor shower] causes damage every second and knockdown every 3 or both damage and knockdown every 3. the correct answer is damage and knockdown every 3 seconds.

What snaek meant to post was:
[struck for 84 fire damage + knocked down][every 3 seconds]
=
[struck for 84 fire damage] every 3 seconds + [knocked down] every 3 seconds
= Meteor Shower

Also, while by itself does not cause scatter (because the damage interval prevent the AI from recognising a constant source of damage and the knockdowns prevent movement anyway), using additional AoE DoTs will cause scatter AI to trigger.

Short answer, yes the damage is triggered every 3 seconds along with the knockdown.

MS only does damage when the foe gets KDed, which is every 3 seconds.

No. It does damage in addition to the kd every 3 secs, so long as the foe remains in range.

@papaschtroumpf Of the two, [[meteor shower] is the better spell. That said, it really depends on where you are playing. Ascalon and the Northern Shverpeaks, for example, don't have that many foes with hard hitting skills where shutdown becomes an important part of play. [[fire storm] will suffice as it can out damage MS. You'll find it won't work too well in later areas where mobs will simply walk out of it or use spells/armor boosters/etc to negate it all.

To clarify, MS does stated damage from skill 3 times, so your damage listed is 1/3 as much as it should be . This means at 12 Fire Magic, you're getting 290 damage from Fire Storm and about 270 from Meteor Shower. What you're paying for with the cast time and the energy cost is the shutdown, which includes knockdown which implies interruption.

My question: Why not bring both? Drop Meteors to prevent scatter and shutdown defenses and then hit 'em with Fire Storm for extra damage. Most Ele "nukers" are going to have multiple Area of Effect skills on their bar anyway.

because [fire storm] is a terrible spell! if anything you should take [searing heat] and [teinai's heat] instead... [meteor shower] is already a conditional enough skill, and pretty useless without [glyph of sacrifice] and prefferably [assassin's promise] but I guess old school [echo]+[arcane echo] or at least [glyph of renewal] will also work to some extent...

Per the rest of this thread, this was my main question and your answer is wrong, in terms of pure damage they are basically the same.

Thanks for all that answers, I only have Prophecies, so a lot of build advice using skills from other campaigns doesn't apply. I need to remember to add this in my posts, as well as the fact that my character is only 18 and has not gone far into the jungle or the southern shiverpeaks, so some skills sare not yet available to me.

I find that the enemies are usually dead by the time meteor shower is cast by heroes (even with a 20% wand), and the bosses that it would be helpful on are always too busy running after my monks (with a Benny Hill soundtrack playing in the background*) to be affected

I haven't seen any discussion on the size of the AoE
Both Fire Storm and Meteor Shower claim to hit enemies adjacent to the initial target.
Later powers like [Searing Heat] or [Rodgort's Invocation] hit foes nearby

can the description be trusted? The Fire Storm AoE looks huge, but I actually don't see that many damage numbers.
